Toning a darkroom print is a popular way of improving stability of a metal-based pigment and subtly altering its base shades. Most chemical toners work by replacing the metallic silver in the emulsion with a silver compound. Similar shades can be emulated by digital means, as shown in my work here. Different shades can be added to the highlights and to the shadows, producing a duotone image.
